Day 357 – Darts Match

I struggled to find a new thing for today. I’ve been waiting on a few deliveries for big new things that would help me close the year with a bang, but due to well, everything, they’ve either been cancelled or not arrived. I wanted to find something bigger than the average new thing to fill the gap, but after a tough search, the only thing I could come up with was watching a live darts match. Not exactly the most exciting and inspiring new thing I had in mind.

Darts is a big pub game in the UK, much look snooker or pool, but all of these have passed me by. I don’t know much about the sport other than it’s a mini-game I play poorly in the Yakuza and Judgement games, and that the triple 20 is important. I reluctantly tuned in to the second round in the World Championships which was streaming live on YouTube.

I’m not going to lie, it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was going on, but once I did I was in. Each game was over in a matter of minutes, the winner being the first one to reach 0 from 501. Due to the unpredictable nature of some of the darts and the pace of the game, I found myself actually not hating it…

I watched the first match in the round and I actually found it interesting. There were a lot of near misses, close calls, and skilful shots at a rapid pace, it was actually exciting in places! I couldn’t believe it. It had long been paired with snooker in my head as endlessly long and boring sports. I’m not saying I’m a convert, I still turned it off at the first opportunity, but I might linger a little longer before switching channels next time I see it on the TV.
