Day 323 – Watercolour Flowers

I’ve tried painting different things for a couple of my new thing challenges, but it’s fair to say it’s not a strong suit of mine. Of all the things I’ve done, the Bob Ross tutorial, where we painted our happy little clouds with watercolours, was my favourite. I loved the softness and adaptability of the watercolours, I thought they were a lot more forgiving than the harsh acrylics I’d used before. I had picked up some blank postcards made with thick paper for watercolours, and I had a slow afternoon, so I decided to spend it attempting to paint some watercolour flowers.

I’m not artistically blessed, so I definitely needed some clear instructions on where to start and a bit of practice too. I first checked out a lady on YouTube that has a lot of different videos on watercolour flowers.

Her flowers were beautiful, but the action for me was so quick that I soon became lost, not only that, but the camera seemed so far away from the flowers that it was hard to tell quite what was happening. I then looked for a photo how-to and came across a lovely website called The Postman’s Knock. Here I was able to follow along and amazingly created my first flowers.

My roses never seemed to look right, but I was curious to try some other styles, so I found another, much slower video to work from.

This tutorial was the one. I put some calming music on, chose my colours, and got to work, and I’m really pleased with the results.

They look so dainty and beautiful, not words I can normally use to describe my creativity. I spent such a pleasant and calming afternoon making these, that I will definitely pick up my brushes again to make some more. I will use the ones I’ve made so far to send little surprise notes to my friends and family, a little gesture that will hopefully put a smile on their face.
