Despite some recent evidence to the contrary, I’m not normally one for fancy dress. I admire people who go all in, and I love a good costume wordplay, but I just can’t seem to get into it. I think this is why the Japanese “mundane/sober Halloween” costume trend appealed so much to me. I read a Twitter thread a while ago listing different entries into a sober Halloween costume competition and just knew I had to give it a go.
I loved this idea. As I was actually celebrating Halloween this year (on my sofa), I decided to take part, and after a recent trip to the supermarket, I knew exactly what my costume would be.

That’s right, I’m dressed up as a woman who only goes into the shop for milk so doesn’t grab a basket. We’ve all been there, we’ve all done it, and that’s why I love these costume ideas – they’re so relatable! Plus, they’re so super easy to do. James got me to guess what he was – he came out in pyjama bottoms, a shirt, tie, and blazer, and a little dab of toothpaste on his mouth. I didn’t guess correctly (I went with “running late”) but he was a manager in an early morning Zoom meeting – too real!
